GET Fieldwork

The Global Engineering Track (GET) elective specialization requires completion of a 6+ week fieldwork experience, administered through the GET Fieldwork course (ENGI E4201).

Fieldwork Eligibility

GET Students can choose to do a summer internship in industry (in the US or globally), research/academic internship, or an industry project supervised by faculty in partnership with organizations/corporations.

All GET students must submit a Fieldwork Certification form.

The GET Fieldwork Certification form for GET 2024 will open midway through the spring 2024 term.

This step should be completed as soon as possible after confirming your summer position. Your fieldwork must be certified prior to the start of the experience. Students planning to complete multiple fieldwork experiences should fill out a separate certification request for each experience.

Please remember, students must complete 12 credits towards their M.S. program prior to the start of the GET Fieldwork.

We recommend students submit their requests as soon as possible. The GET Team requires 7-10 business days to review and process your fieldwork request. For F-1 visa holders, ISSO will require an additional 7-10 business days to process CPT requests. We will process fieldwork requests in the order they are received. We are not able to expedite individual requests; kindly remain patient.

Students who require work authorization must review the information below regarding CPT.

Apply for CPT

International students enrolled in GET are eligible to use CPT for an internship during Summer 2024 provided they complete at least 12 credits towards their degree program prior to the start of the internship.

If you are completing a summer internship, you must adhere to the following guidelines:

Using the Fieldwork Certification form, students must submit an official offer letter from the employer on the company's letterhead stating the following six items. The offer letter must contain all the items below in order to be processed. The following sample offer letter template may be shared with the employer to facilitate the process.

Offer letter requirements:

  1. Stated on official company letterhead.
  2. Specific start date and end date.
  3. Complete street address where the work will be performed. If the internship is to be conducted remotely, the employer must state this on the offer letter along with the physical address of the organization.
  4. Include the number of hours of work per week.
  5. Include a detailed description or list of position duties (as it relates to your program of study and its applications).
  6. Signed and dated by the employer.

The GET Team will not process the fieldwork request if any of the above items are missing.

As a reminder, prior to applying for CPT all GET students must complete the Fieldwork Certification form.

We recommend students submit their requests as soon as possible. The GET Team requires 7-10 business days to review and process your fieldwork request. For F-1 visa holders, ISSO will require an additional 7-10 business days to process CPT requests. We will process fieldwork requests in the order they are received.
